Security alarm systems work when you’re away from home, and can also offer excellent protection when you’re in the house as well. For the most part, intruders tend to avoid houses with residents inside, but not always. If you’re not at home, your property is in jeopardy; when you’re in your house, should an intrusion occur, you or your family are also vulnerable.
Having a security system in place means that you can keep your house secured whether you’re home alone or not home at all. Be sure to keep your system activated whether your home is occupied or not.
And, keep your keys to yourself. Don’t leave keys under a potted plant or welcome mat; and be sure to keep car and house keys apart if you are leaving your keys with a valet or an automotive repair shop. If someone knows where you live or can easily find out, giving them the key to your house even for a short period of time is an open invitation.
Likewise, don’t invite strangers into your home. If you don’t recognize the person at your front door, don’t just take it for granted that the person ringing your bell is who they claim to be. Just because someone is wearing a uniform that indicates they work for the gas company – don’t be certain that they do without proper identification.
